Totally different vibes, totally different populations maybe not demographically, but NOVA might or might not be out of your reach financially; you might also want to check out each area's traffic issues. Both have their pluses and minuses, both have school districts with solid reputations.
We have visited both, I just thought we might get a more specific picture from the people who have more insight than we do. The beach at VAB is sure a plus. The only negative I have experienced in either was VAB where a lady, who could have also been a tourist stared me in particular down at a Japanese Restaurant about 7 years ago shaking her head in disapproval.

But again, do your homework carefully. The two areas are vastly different from each other. I think both areas are equally tolerant of biracial families so deciding which place to live would hinge on what your priorities are at the moment. If having higher paying jobs, more competitive schools, public transportation and being closer in driving distance to larger cities like Philadelphia, New York and Pittsburgh would mean more to you then choose NoVA.
But if having a larger home, slower pace of life, lower overall cost of living, warmer climate and being next to the beach is more attractive to you, go for Virginia Beach. Both areas are wonderful places to live, IMO.

People on here will try to tell you that NOVA is some utopia where things like you experienced in VAB never happen but it is simply not true. In the past year or so there was a woman who threatened to attack someone at a Manassas mall for speaking Spanish, a similar incident happened in a Walmart and you also have the uprising over the mosque near Fredericksburg. The thing is, you could have those same isolated events anywhere Also, if you are looking to move somewhere to form genuine relationships with people, neither area will be great with VAB being a little better than NOVA.
