In the economy of heterosexual online dating, where thumbs wield the ultimate power over a person's love life, height appears to be an immensely valuable currency. The listing of height in dating app profiles has become so prevalent, that many swipers come to expect it, and sometimes hypothesise when it's been omitted from the profile. Online dating FOMO is ruining my chances of finding a date.

In my own experience, I have grown to attach a great deal of importance to the feet and inches in a person's bio. As I idly swipe through Bumble, I will scroll through a dater's photos before perusing their bio, searching for a number that might dictate the crucial decision: I'm 5ft8, and I often swipe left which means no on men under 6ft.

I'm far from alone in this swiping behaviour. Amber Fahrner, 6ft, says height is at the top of her list when it comes to swiping. She lists her height in her dating bio, and has been told by some men that she's too tall for them. Jordan Maahs, 6ft, says she had "some trouble with the height thing" when she was using dating apps.

Emma Lumley, 5ft7, says she only swipes right on men over 6ft1. Stephen—who prefers to use only his first name—says his online dating experience was marred by negative interactions about his height. Just be honest OP.

But for some reason the pics were often quite exceptional, and didn't match what was shown in real life. One guy had black and white studio shots posted, but he looked nothing like that IRL.

I do like men of modest height, so having a guy show up a few inches shorter was a pleasant surprise. What's even more interesting, is that these same guys would complain to me of the women they encountered online, how slim pics were posted, and a fatty showed up for the date. Personally, I don't advocate men trying to look prettier than what they are.

I actually prefer average, or sometimes even ugly men. I prefer looks that are 'off' in some way, but the key here is when a man doesn't give a crap about this--that he 'knows' he's desirable with or without looking pretty. Gosh, I love that in a man, and it makes me crazy!!!!! You ugly prick, but with the swagger as if you're God's gift. That's why I love these actors that are ugly, or the ones with really bad pockmarked skin, or something that would completely break the confidence of a weaker man.

If a man can stand up to his own ugliness and still conquer women , then IMO he's light years more attractive than a pretty man. That's the one I want to talk to!

But when you get into the inches or anything staying 6 feetish then you are probably golden as long as you are taller then they are because they know how tall they are in and out of heels. Women routinely change height inches depending on what shoes they are wearing , and as a result their sense of height in men is generally skewed, since we usually wear shoes that only give us an inch, if that, and never more.

I recently started dating a 5'6" girl who wore high stiletto heels on our first date, and we were almost eye to eye.

She came out and asked me how tall I was after dinner. I don't lie about my height, but I can see guys doing it. I feel short quite often, and no point lying about it if you are going to meet somebody. I purposely won't date over 5'6" just to not have to deal with it. I don't think 5'10" is short, but it sure feels that way.

I doubt I could ever get away with adding even an inch on my profile.
