Like others, I just bought the game when it was bundled with all the DLC. The strikes are separated into playlists based on your light level and most players have gotten to the highest tier which is I think is light level. If you are in the or playlist there are a lot less people playing. Everything else is pretty empty because there's just no reason to do them other than exploring.
And it is not dead. I can find a team for strike pretty much at any time.

How come there is no matchmaking system on Weekly Nightfall Strikes?
Raids shall never get matchmaking, but i agree regarding normal Nightfall - i totally don't understand why Bungie never allowed public matchmake for normal nfs since D1. Most guiding duos don't even use mics anyway. And soloing heroic adventures on Mercury is harder.
